1. Missing Photoshop WebP Save Option?
I recently encountered a rather peculiar issue upon switching to Adobe Photoshop CC (64 Bit). When I went to save an image using the “File > Save As” command, I was surprised to find that the WebP format was conspicuously missing from the list of available options.
This was perplexing, as I’ve always preferred to stay on relatively recent versions of Photoshop, and it’s a problem I had never run into before.
To give some context, I’ve grown weary of the increasing bloat in the newest Photoshop releases. Many of the latest features are simply unnecessary for my workflow. I find that slightly older versions are perfectly capable, occupy less disk space, and are noticeably faster to launch.
2. solution
After some digging, I discovered that the ability to save images as WebP is tied to a specific plugin: WebP.8bi
. The solution is straightforward:
- Download the
webp.8bi
plugin file. - Place it into the Photoshop plugin directory, typically found at:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CC\Required\Plug-Ins\File Formats
- Restart Photoshop.
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CC\Required\Plug-Ins\File Formats ├Camera Raw.8bi ├Cineon.8bi ├Dicom.8bi ├ICOFormat.8bi ├JPEG2000.8bi ├PBM.8bi ├PCX.8bi ├Pixar.8bi ├PSDX.8bi ├Radiance.8bi ├U3D.8bi ├WBMP - copy.8bi ├WBMP.8bi
Be sure to restart Photoshop after placing the file in the folder. Once you do, you should see the WebP option restored in your “Save As” dialog.
As a long-time Photoshop user, this was a first for me. I can’t say how widespread this issue is globally; I suspect it might only affect a small number of users under specific circumstances. Nevertheless, I wanted to document and share my experience here, in the hope that it might help someone else who stumbles upon the same frustrating problem.
